What is Kundalini Yoga?

Kundalini Yoga is a combination of movement, breath, meditation, and chanting. Its goal is not only to make the body stronger and more energetic but also to increase your level of self-awareness and consciousness. If you live in the  Los Angeles area, join us for a class our Santa Monica Kundalini yoga studio to reap all the benefits.

Top 10 Benefits of Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga offers benefits for people of all ages. Some of these benefits are mental, whereas others are physical.

  • Reduce stress and anxiety

  • Improve cognition and mood

  • Better flexibility

  • Help reduce back pain

  • Strengthen the core

  • Strengthen willpower and creativity

  • Strengthen the nervous system

  • Builds strength

  • Improves lung capacity

  • Lowers your blood pressure and heart rate

Benefit #1: Reduce stress and anxiety

One study involving elementary and middle school students found that, after 10 weeks of Kundalini Yoga, students had "significantly improved" levels of stress and resilience. Similar results have been found on the stress levels of adults. We see similar results at our Santa Monica Kundalini Yoga studio!

Benefit #2: Improve cognition and mood

A 2017 study notes that, though cognitive decline is common as we grow older, a 12-week Kundalini Yoga program helps improve age-related cognitive impairment (both memory and executive functioning). And it does so both short and long-term.

This study further found that Kundalini Yoga also has positive effects on mood. Subjects engaged in this yoga style had improvements in their feelings of depression  and apathy, in addition to reporting higher levels of resilience.

Benefit #3: Better flexibility

If you want to be more flexible, Kundalini Yoga may help. One study involving 60 college women found that 16 weeks of 60-minute training sessions held six times per week "significantly improved" the participants' flexibility. Our Santa Monica Kundalini Yoga students find similar results.

Benefit #4: Help reduce back pain

Increased flexibility can potentially help reduce back pain  by stretching the muscles and ligaments. This is enhanced by yoga's ability to increase circulation, allowing the body to get healing oxygen and nutrients to the pained area.

Benefit #5: Strengthened core

Many Kundalini movements and techniques work the core or abdominal muscles. Breath of fire, in particular, works the navel center. A strong core is essential in yoga and helps to improve your posture in daily life. The navel chakra is also associated with emotions, so strengthening your core muscles can go a long way in helping you better control your emotions and handle life’s many triggers to stress.

Benefit #6 Strengthen willpower and creativity

Kundalini yoga awakens your inner willpower right at the core of your solar plexus (Third Chakra) at the navel point. What that means is that you build a strong heat in this region, which helps in digesting not only food but also past memories and self-doubt. We become much more able to process and digest events that happen and take necessary action immediately to eradicate things, people or situations that are causing us more harm than good.

Benefit #7: Strengthen the nervous system

Kundalini yoga strengthens your nervous system. So when you’re in down dog or plank pose for three whole minutes and your entire body is shaking, have no fear! Your nervous system is toning. And the stronger your nerves are, the more you will be able to act in a cool, calm and collected matter in the face of any situation, be it a car accident, big presentation or family drama.

Benefit #8: Builds strength

Because you hold each posture for an extended period of time (sometimes up to five minutes!), Kundalini yoga is a great way to strengthen and tone your muscles. Some of the more intense breathing techniques—like Breath of Fire can also build core strength, as you have to engage your abdominal muscles with each exhale.

Benefit #9: Improved Lung Capacity

The breathing techniques practiced in Kundalini Yoga greatly improve lung capacity. Most people today do not know how to breathe properly, which can be detrimental to both physical and mental health. When lung capacity is improved, more oxygen can flow through the body. In turn, memory is improved and mental clarity can be achieved. Higher oxygen levels also allow the body to move freely and reduce muscle tension. This is one of the biggest benefits of Kundalini Yoga that our Los Angeles area students see after regular practice.

Benefit #10: Lowers blood pressure and heart rate

Studies have repeatedly shown that Kundalini yoga—specifically the deep breathing techniques used during it can lower your blood pressure. Long, slow breaths calm your autonomic nervous system and reduce stress, thus lowering both your blood pressure and pulse rate.
